AVSN: Anti-vaccination

Background

In the ABC News article Anti-vaccination campaigners slapped with safety warning, AVSN president, Meryl Dorey, was quoted as saying:
We are not, never have been, anti-vaccination. We are pro-information, pro-choice and a health safety watchdog.

It is important for the general public to be aware that the Australian Vaccination-Skeptics Network (AVN) provides incorrect and misleading information that is solely anti-vaccination; their claim of being pro-choice is irrelevant.

The following quotes and images from the president and spokesperson of the AVSN, Meryl Dorey, clearly demonstrates their anti-vaccination position.

Anti-vaccination

Vaccines are instruments of death

"There will come a time - I pray to God that it will happen in my lifetime - when those who have pushed vaccines upon innocent, helpless babies - doctors, pharmaceutical companies, government officials - will be proven to have lied and cheated these instruments of death into our children's bloodstream. When that occurs, the outcry will be heard around the world and there will not be enough hiding places on the globe for these murderers to hide or enough money to pay for compensation. Of course, it will be too late for the babies, like this poor child, to be saved. But we will be able to take satisfaction from the fact that never again will anyone have to be pushed to poison their child because for once and for all, it will be known as poison and we will all wonder how it was we fell for the vaccine lie for as long as we did."

Vaccinating a child = rape with full penetration

"Court orders rape of a child. Think this is an exaggeration? Think again. This is assault without consent and will full penetration too. If we as a society allow this crime to take place, we are every bit as guilty as the judge who made the order and the doctor who carries it out..."

Vaccines are poisons. Vaccines don't work. Vaccines are dangerous

"And when you look at the list of ingredients in vaccinations, the list of poisons, there's no other word for them. They call them toxins, it's just another word for a poison. It's hard to imagine, ok, where did we ever get the idea that by injecting poisonous substances into the human body we're developing health. I don't understand where that idea ever came from. The only thing that poisons do, is poison. So, if you are going to be putting something that's poisonous into the human body, what do you expect to happen. You expect it to get poisoned. And, as you said, where are the benefits of vaccination?"

"Vaccines don't work. Vaccines are dangerous. And people who think that when they vaccinate their child they're protecting them, unfortunately, the evidence shows that that's not the case. Vaccines don't immunise. All they do is sensitise. They make you more susceptible to allergic problems, to food allergies, to asthma, to excema, to autism, to all of these other problems that didn't used to exist, or didn't used to exist in the numbers that we see now, for sure."

Measles, mumps and rubella are not vaccine-preventable

"Unfortunately, I'm afraid that there are two problems with what you are saying here. The first is that measles, mumps and rubella are all mild childhood diseases which are generally benign."

"None of these illnesses are vaccine-preventable."

"All vaccines carry with them a risk of serious side effects and even death."

Have you considered not vaccinating at all?

"Dear [redacted],

If you are aware of the serious side effects from vaccination, are you also aware that many vaccines are incredibly ineffective? If so, then have you considered not vaccinating at all? If you need more information on this, please visit our web site at:...

Other anti-vaccination messages

Vaccine freedom in our Lifetime

"Well, I have a dream too. My dream is that one day, I will live to see a world where everyone has the right to 'just say no' to vaccination. Where drug company money won't be able to buy the good opinion of the media; where people's minds are not so overwhelmed by fear of diseases that they ignore the dangers of vaccines and where medical professionals actually work to create health rather than destroy diseases their own drugs and vaccines have created."

"Call me a crazy optimist, but that is my dream. And if enough of us not only dream it, but act in ways that will help it come to pass, perhaps before too many more New Years have passed, we will all live to see it."

"But simply stating that the benefits of vaccination outweight the risks leads me to think ... that you have no information on either the true benefits or the true risks of either vaccinating or not vaccinating and need to do some research on this subject."

Source: Meryl Dorey - AVN Facebook, March 2010

"This is a sort-of off-topic question. I would like to donate to the efforts to help in Haiti but I don't want ANY of my money going towards vaccines so that red cross and Unicef are out. Does anyone know of an organisation doing work on the ground there helping without vaccines? I want to provide food, clean water, education, housing - but not drugs (and I'm sure there are others here who want to do the same)."

"Better hygiene and better nutrition is the reason why we've seen this decline. It has nothing to do with vaccination."

"We've all been brought up to believe in vaccinations and it makes us feel good to think that you can inject a needle into someone and they'll be protected. But, unfortunately, the facts don't bear that out."

I do not call them immunisations because they're not immunisations, they're vaccinations, and they do not make you immune. No one who is vaccinated is immune to a disease."

"And you asked before about why we're vaccinating. Well, why were tobacco companies allowed to sell cigarettes for all that time. And why were they allowed to do all the research into cigarettes that showed that cigarettes were perfectly healthy and no problem. There is nothing that makes a pharmaceutical company inherently any more ethical than a tobacco company would be. Pharmaceutical companies answer first and foremost to their boards of directors and to their shareholders. They are not in it to make the world a better place, they are not in it for health. They are in it for the bottom line and that's the dollar."

"And they found that using a toxic substance creates a better immune response. So, there are incredibly toxic substances that are in vaccines, poisonous substances that are in vaccines,..."

Love them. Protect them. Never inject them.

The AVN sells a t-shirt with the slogan Love Them, Protect Them, Never Inject Them.
Meryl Dorey explains that this slogan is something that:
"... you can prodly wear to let others know a bit about this subject and about our organisations. Want people to ask you questions? There are T-Shirt designs that will help them do that."

What do AVSN members and supporters think?

A long-time member and supporter of the AVSN, homeopath Fran Sheffield, challenged the AVSN on it's dishonesty and deception when it comes to being anti-vaccination:
I don't think these repeated statements are being disengenuous though.

I think almost everyone, supporters and non-supporters, believe the AVN is antivaccine in spite of its protests to the contrary.

How can they do otherwise when 99.9% of information about vaccines released by the AVN is anti or reveals their problems? When there is not explanation why this imbalance exists?

It is possible to be BOTH anti-vaccine and pro-choice but when the anti-vaccine label is denied in the face of evidence to the contrary, it makes us look dishonest - something the judge hinted at with her 'coy' statement? It also places our pro-choice position in the back seat, out of people's minds.

As far as public opinion goes, I don't think the anti-vaccine position is the problem - they can cope with that.

The problem is that most people, even supporters in secret, now believe the AVN is dishonest and this has caused the AVN more harm than anything else. This is what will take a long time to get over, not any perceived anti-vaccine stance which they can respect even it they don't agree.

Do we have a blind spot?

If the AVN wants to be perceived as being a truthful organisation then it has to proudly accept the anti-vaccine label or do something that explains (repeatedly) why most of the information it provides about vaccines and vaccine promoters is negative.

I love the info that the AVN provides so people can make an informed choice - and I want it to survive - but I can't tut tut about them calling us anti-vaccine and I hate feeling as though I have to support the deception.
